An extremely useful visual aid to show the pattern of electric fields clearly. The apparatus consist of a flat perspex base with a mounted plastic petri dish which holds the fluid.

Semolina or lycopodium powder is spread on the fluid and the electrodes are inserted. A current is passed through the electrodes and the electric field pattern can is observed.

There are two types of electrodes supplied, a single point electrodes and straight electrodes which allow the different patterns to be compared.

The STE Malvern Energy Conversion Kit, originally designed at Malvern College Oxford is a proven system for developing an understanding of energy related subjects.

Although other Energy Conversion Kits are available the STE kit follows the original concept closely and provides a unique design feature which allows fast, precise connection of individually units to the Switch and Triple Light unit without the need of cumbersome 'G' clamps.

4 Line Shaft Unit EC001/4

The Line Shaft Unit is used to show the conversion from Electrical energy, via Mechanical, to Potential energy by winding up a mass on a cord. The falling mass drives the Generator and produces the power to light a lamp showing the reverse of the cycle.

6 Turbine Pump Unit EC001/6

The Turbine Pump Unit is designed to drive a Generator to produce Electricity when used in the Turbine mode or for use as a Pump driven by the Motor to raise a " Head of Water" to produce Potential energy. The rugged construction has a tough Perspex window to show the functions of the blades of the Turbine. Reasonable water pressure is required from the Laboratory tape is required to show the Turbine driving the Generator effectively.

7 Head of Water Unit EC001/7

Used in conjunction with the Turbine Pump Unit to provide an open and closed system in demonmstrating the conversion of Electrical energy to Kinetic energy in the pump and from Potential energy in the Head of Water. The construction comprises of two vessels and conecting tubes with a two level platform.

8 Switch Triple Light Unit EC001/8

This unique design houses the combined Switch, Triple Light Unit and a fixed jig to hold the other connecting units which provide the energy to light the lamps and fulfils the requirements of showing the change over switch.

The alignment of the pulleys for interconnection of the units with the Drive Belts is assured and therefore provides an efficient performance without the use of 'G' clamps. The Switch is a double pole / double throw knife switch for the connecting the motor - generator energy sources or the Lamp Unit.

The Triple Light Unit comprises 3 MES lamps which are connected parallel and provides an indication of the energy out puts form the various sources and also indicates the energy requirement to light each individual lamp.

9 Spring Unit EC001/9

This unit shows the conversion of energy stored in a twisted rubber cord to Electrical energy. The tough rubber cords are attached to a fixed point and to a shaft with a Pulley supported by pillars. The cords are wound up and when released the drive shaft in turn drives a Generator Unit via a Belt and Pulley.

10 Steam Engine Unit EC001/10

Mounted on a wooden base plate which slots into the mounting jig, is a single cylinder Steam Engine with Flywheel and Pulley. The boiler has a drain cock / safety valve and uses solid fuel pellets. The unit is used to drive the Motor Generator Unit which in turn lights the lamps.

A simple visual demonstration of the principal that a body propelled horizontally will fall at the vertically at the same rate as a body allowed to fall freely.

The apparatus comprises of a spring loaded 'L' section launcher with holes for locating two 19mm steel spheres which represent the falling bodies. The launcher is activated by a push button mechanism, one steel sphere is propelled horizontally and the other drops freely. The mechanism is mounted on a wood base and has an inbuilt compartment to hold the steel spheres when not in use.

A redesign of a traditional method of determining 'g'. An electromagnet is energised and a steel sphere is attached. When the power to the electromagnet is switched off the sphere falls and the unit automatically activates a timer. The sphere hits a large platform which then stops the timer and the speed can be ascertained.

The size and sensitivity across the whole of the stop platform allows repeatable results to be achieved effortlessly.
